Some highlights from the company’s more than 80-year history.

  • Founding of locksmith’s shop in Grüningen (Switzerland, ZH)

    In 1936, Albert Schmid opened a locksmith business in his hometown of Grüningen. In addition to locksmith work, horses were also shoed.

  • Move to new workshop in Eschlikon

    With the relocation to Eschlikon, the company expanded its offerings to include combustion systems and wood drying plants.

  • Development of the first log wood boiler

    In 1965, the first hot water boiler for log wood and wood chips was developed and produced.

  • Founding of joint-stock company and construction of new factory with office wing in Eschlikon

    The Schmid AG and Schmid Ventilatoren AG were founded. In the same year, the newly built factory and office building in the industrial area of Eschlikon were occupied. The headquarters of the Schmid Group are still located here today.

  • First wood storage heating system

    The slogan “Wood energy stored” became a hit. Schmid was the first company worldwide to sell log wood heating systems with storage. Mocked by competitors, highly sought after by customers. Today, the use of a storage tank is legally required.

  • First underfeed combustion system

    Compared to blow-in combustion, the new underfeed system also allowed the use of forest wood chips or chips from the wood industry as fuel.

  • Retirement of Albert Schmid, takeover by Hans-Jürg Schmid

    Due to Albert Schmid’s long-term illness, his son Hans-Jürg had already been managing the company operationally for several years. In 1980, Hans-Jürg Schmid officially took over the company as sole owner.

    Control system with stepless power regulation and combustion optimization

    The new control system enabled a quantum leap in efficiency and low emission values, as the regulation now automatically adjusted steplessly to the required heating output.

    Pyrotronic Modular moving grate combustion system

    The fuels required for wood chip combustion became increasingly moist and had a significantly higher ash content. The moving grate system was able to process this fuel more effectively and automatically discharge the ash.

  • Oil heat transfer boiler with moving grate: Power generation using ORC process

    For power generation with wood, not only steam but also oil was newly used as a heat transfer medium. The advantage is that oil does not build up pressure even at 300 degrees.

    Developed by Schmid and later copied by all competitors. The automatic boiler tube cleaning provided greater maintenance convenience and helped ensure consistently high efficiency.

  • Philipp Lüscher succeeds Hans-Jürg Schmid

    On the occasion of the anniversary celebration “75 years of Schmid AG,” Hans-Jürg Schmid stepped down as CEO after more than 50 years in the company. In agreement with the family, Philipp Lüscher took over his succession.

    New pellet and wood chip heating system UTSD

    Development of the UTSD with a capacity range of up to 250 kW. The combustion system impresses with excellent performance values and can be supplied with an integrated e-filter.

  • UTSR visio moving grate combustion system

    In 2019, the Schmid moving grate combustion system was redesigned. The UTSR visio impresses with a new air flow system, newly developed grate bars, an innovative Rezi concept, and a controlled bypass for high filter availability. This ensures consistently low emissions in all operating conditions.

  • Swiss market: NIBE heat pumps

    Heat pumps from the NIBE brand are among the global leaders and perfectly complement Schmid’s product range. Since 2019, ground/water heat pumps as well as air/water heat pumps have been offered in Switzerland.

  • New operation system PersonalTouch visio

Services

The wide range of the Schmid Group includes wood-fired heating systems from single-family homes to industrial large-scale plants with a capacity of up to 8 MW. Customers include not only homeowners and property owners but also the agricultural and forestry sector, the wood industry, real estate companies, energy service providers, commercial and industrial enterprises, as well as cities and municipalities. In the domestic market of Switzerland, heat pumps have also been offered since 2019.

  • Wood heating systems up to 260 kW

    Efficient wood-fired heating systems for single-family or multi-family homes. Domestic Systems include wood heating systems and heat pumps with a capacity from 35 to 260 kW. The energy sources are log wood, pellets, and wood chips.

    A powerful range for district heating networks and industrial applications. Industrial Systems include wood-fired heating systems with a capacity from 180 to 8000 kW. A wide variety of biogenic solid fuels can be used as energy sources.

    Schmid AG offers 24/7 customer service (365 days a year), ensuring that customers are supported around the clock. With the large spare parts warehouse, short waiting times and therefore minimal downtime are possible.

  • Air / Water Heat Pumps

    These ecological heat pumps work very reliably with heat from the ambient air. There are models for both indoor and outdoor installation, as shown in the illustrated heat pump. In summer, they can also be used for cooling.

  • Geothermal Energy as a Heat Source

    The brine / water heat pumps operate very efficiently with geothermal energy. To harness this, ground probes are inserted into the earth through drilling. These utilize the heat in the ground (geothermal energy).

    The domestic hot water heat pump uses the existing thermal energy from the ambient air to heat water. It offers a very simple and cost-effective solution for hot water production.
